Name: Martin F. Kagnoff , MD

Title: Professor of Medicine and Pediatrics, Director, Laboratory of Mucosal Immunology

Dr. Kagnoff, Professor of Medicine and Pediatrics,received his M.D. degree from Harvard Medical School and subsequent Post Graduate Training in Medicine, Pediatrics, Gastroenterology and Immunology at Harvard, Cornell and the Salk Institute.  He is widely recognized as a world authority in Mucosal Immunology and has trained numerous students and postdoctoral fellows both from the U.S. and abroad in this field, many of whom hold prominent positions on the faculties of US and foreign universities.  Dr. Kagnoff is Director of an NIH training program, and a member of several graduate programs at UCSD.  He has received numerous awards and served in the past as an Editor of the Journal of Clinical Investigation and the American Journal of Physiology: Gastrointestinal and Liver Physiology, and an Associate Editor of the Journal of Immunology.  He has published more than 200 papers relevant to the field.


Name: Susan Algert

Title: Nutritionist

Dr. Susan Algert has over 30 years of experience in nutrition counseling, education and research. She has worked as a clinical research dietitian in three major medical centers, and as a professor in the California State University system. In addition to her current work counseling both adult and pediatric patients with celiac disease, Dr Algert's specialties have included heart disease, diabetes and eating disorders. Dr. Algert has authored a cookbook and nutritional guide, the UCSD Healthy Diet for Diabetes, and numerous scientific publications on health promotion and disease prevention. Dr. Algert's current research projects at the Warren Center include assessing compliance to the gluten-free diet. She is also collaborating with the Warren Center pediatric and adult gastroenterologists to determine new methods for assessing a safe threshold for gluten for patients with celiac disease.   

Dr. Algert has her Ph.D. in Social Science from the University of California, Irvine and an M.S. degree in Nutrition from Case Western Reserve University in Cleveland, Ohio. She is also a Registered Dietitian.   


Name: Alexis Broquet

Title: Postdoctoral Scholar

Dr Broquet received his PhD from the Paris VI University. His research interest is focused on the viral/epithelial interaction in the innate immunity in the intestinal epithelium. Dr Broquet joined the laboratory in November 2005.  


Name: Laia Egea-Pujol

Title: PhD Postdoctoral Scholar

Dr. Egea-Pujol received her PhD from the University of Barcelona. Her research interestes include the study of granulocyte-macrophage colony-stimulating factor(GM-CSF) in chronic inflammatory conditions of the gastrointestinal tract, such as Crohn's Disease, and the characterization of GM-CSF receptor expression and regulation in intestinal epithelial cells. Dr. Egea-Pujol joined the lab oh November 2006.

Dr. Kim originated from Korea. He received his MD and PhD from Seoul National University. He is interested in mucosal immunity in GI epithelium. Dr. Kim arrived and joined on June 2007.

Dr. Lee received his MD and PhD from Seoul National University in February 2003. His research interests include PolyI:C induced mouse small bowel injury model. Dr. Lee Joined the Lab on March 2007.

Title: Admin Manager

Linda Nelson has been a UCSD staff member since 1992. Before joining the lab in March 2007, she held administrative positions in Structural Engineering, the Office of Graduate Studies and Research, and the UCSD Cancer Center. In addition to supporting the Mucosal Immunology lab, she directs the administrative operations for the Wm. K. Warren Medical Research Center for Celiac Disease

Title: Staff Research Assistant

Ms. Peterson joined the lab in April 2007 and has been at UCSD for 17 years. She received her degree in Biology at Sacramento State College. Her experience include immunology and protein biochemistry with training in molecular biology. Her free time is spent with her large, yellow Labrador, and 2 Arabian horses.
